VAT vs. Sales Tax: Why the Price on the Tag Isn’t Always What You Pay

Ever wonder why the price displayed in most countries is usually exactly what you pay, but in the United States the price at the register is often higher?

The reason is taxes — but different countries handle them differently.

More than 170 countries use a VAT (Value Added Tax) or a similar consumption tax. The tax is generally built into the displayed price.

So if you see something marked $10, you generally pay $10.

In the United States, sales tax is usually added at checkout.

That $10 item might actually cost you $10.60, $10.80, or even more, depending on the state and local tax rates.

Same basic idea. Different system.

In both systems, the government is collecting a tax on your purchases. The big difference for travelers is when you see the tax.

Most countries using VAT:
The tax is already included in the displayed price.

United States:
Sales tax is generally added to the displayed price when you check out.

That means shoppers in many countries know their final price before reaching the register, while visitors to the United States may need to do a little mental math — or simply wait for the receipt!

Why doesn’t the United States use VAT?

There isn’t one simple answer. The U.S. developed its own state-and-local sales-tax system, and changing to a national VAT would be a major change to how consumption taxes are collected. The United States also has no single nationwide sales-tax rate because sales taxes are largely determined by states and local governments.

And yes, if you’ve ever wondered why Americans still measure things in miles, feet and gallons instead of kilometers, meters and liters, you may notice a certain tradition of doing things our own way!

Same basic concept: you pay a tax when you buy something. The difference is whether that tax is already hiding inside the displayed price or gets added at the register.
